JOB TITLE: Volunteer Coordinator & Development Assistant

REPORTS TO: Director of Resource Development

· Hours Needed: Monday through Friday, 11:00 – 7:00 p.m. Ability to maintain flexible core daytime schedule, with occasional weekend work, including up to two weekends a month, would be ideal.

POSITION SUMMARY: Assists theDirector of Resource Development with volunteer coordination, including scheduling volunteers, orienting new volunteers and ensuring that volunteers have a good experience with the organization. This position is also responsible for assisting theDirector of Resource Development with fundraising activities, including the organization’s Annual Benefit, Tag Days, and working with corporate volunteers.

ROLE QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must have experience building, developing, and managing volunteer resources.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Schedule the appropriate amount of volunteers to work in the Community Kitchen.

· Coordinate and facilitate A Just Harvest volunteer orientations.

· Establish and maintain effective communications with volunteers.

· Develop and implement strategies to recruit additional volunteers as needed (for example, posting volunteer opportunities on internet volunteering sites)

· Manage the collection and entry of volunteer contact information and other data.

· Respond to all requests, inquiries, and messages in a timely manner; refer inquiries as appropriate

· Help recruit, train and place volunteers for our annual small fundraisers, such as Tag Days, CROP Walk and Hunger Walk.

· Assist with various components of the Annual Banquet in October, including compiling the list of Volunteers of the Year, tracking ticket sales, managing basic logistics and assisting as needed with the Annual Magazine.

· Provide public education on A Just Harvest’s mission, advocacy, and direct service.

· Represent A Just Harvest at local and regional volunteer/service/mission fairs, congregational events, related ministry and denominationally based meetings, and faith-based advocacy groups.

· Assist Development Director in recruiting and engaging corporate volunteers and young professionals in the work and mission of A Just Harvest.

· Attend staff, agency, and inter-agency meetings, trainings and seminars as assigned.Participate in the agency’s public relations and fund raising activities as required

· Research specific fundraising opportunities.

· Assist with maintenance of the data base and the timely thanking of donors.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

· Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and public speaking skills.

· Minimum two year’s experience with volunteer or human services management/coordination.

· Exemplary organizational skills and keen attention to detail.

· Familiarity with Microsoft Word.

· Able to work comfortably with diverse constituencies.

· Previous fundraising experience, either as staff or as a volunteer.

AmeriCorps Social Justice Teaching Fellowship!

Life Together is a fellowship and leadership development project that matches young leaders (21-35 years of age) with mission-based non-profit organizations and churches throughout Eastern Massachusetts, and then trains these fellows through diverse spiritual practices, shared leadership models, and community organizing tools (www.lifetogethercommunity.org).

Esperanza Academy, located in Lawrence, MA, is a tuition-free, independent day school in the Episcopal tradition for low income girls in grades 5-8. Esperanza Academy is 100% privately funded and depends greatly on a large population of generous volunteers. (www.EsperanzaAcademy.org)

This teaching fellowship is a partnership between Life Together and Esperanza. Starting in August 2012, Life Together will hire four AmeriCorps teaching fellows that will serve at Esperanza as full-time intern teachers.

During their year with Life Together, fellows: work for social justice, grow as leaders, and live in community with other fellows. In addition to teach four days a week, these teaching fellows will participate in about eight hours a week of leadership training and spiritual reflection, and they will live in community with one another.

Fellows will serve from August 13, 2012 through June 30, 2014, with the possibility of extending the contract for a second year.

Life Together is strategic initiative of The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and an affiliate program of the Episcopal Service Corps, but the fellows come many different spiritual backgrounds.

About the position

The AmeriCorps Teaching Fellow will teach classes, work and or coach in the extended day program and perform other responsibilities related to teaching. The successful candidate will demonstrate belief in Esperanza’s mission, philosophy and strategic plan. The Teaching Fellow will be a person of high moral character with a generous sense of humor, determination and fortitude. The Teaching Fellow shall have the ability to work independently and cooperatively and be committed to goal-oriented leadership. Organizational, computer and communication skills must be exemplary.

About the fellows

Life Together will select 25 fellows from a pool of over 200 applicants. They range in age from 21 to 35, and are willing to work in challenging settings, committed to positive community change, and emotionally mature. Each fellow has demonstrated a deep commitment to working for social justice and has an interest in spiritual growth.

Compensation:

Fellows receive housing, health insurance, a modest monthly living stipend, a transportation stipend, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (to pay student loans or put toward future graduate school tuition). Fellows also receive extensive leadership training.

Jesuit Alumni Volunteer (JAV) Program

The Jesuit Alumni Volunteer (JAV) Program connects men and women who wish to serve in a low-income community with the opportunity to work in an innovative educational environment at Christ the King Jesuit Prep. Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory High School was established to provide working families of Chicago’s West Side with the opportunity to provide their children with a Jesuit, college preparatory education.

Now in its eleventh year of operation, the JAV Program was founded in response to the extensive needs and limited resources of our sister school, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School (CRJHS), opened in 1998 and serving the Southwest Side of Chicago. At CRJHS, the JAV Program has grown to be a vital part of delivering quality, affordable education to our students, and at CtK, the program has begun serving the students and families of the Austin neighborhood.

Our volunteers are alumni/ae of Jesuit and Catholic universities from throughout the US. They demonstrate a commitment to social justice, spiritual and personal growth, and intentional community living – all tenets of our program. Our volunteers give of their gifts and talents to serve the students and families of Cristo Rey and Christ the King in many ways. For two years, they live in intentional community across the street from Christ the King and benefit from lives committed to reflection and action.

For this upcoming school year, the JAV Program is seeking to fill two positions: a teaching position and a position in the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP).

Teaching position: Teaching experience is preferred but not required. Applicant should have background in History, English, Science, or Math. Responsibilities include: creating an annual plan aligned with Cristo Rey Network curriculum; attending Professional Development meetings and faculty meetings; creating lesson plans; and cultivating a positive and disciplined classroom environment.

CWSP position: Christ the King students work 5 days a month at corporate jobs in Chicago to pay for their education. They earn up to 75% of their tuition through their monthly work. The CWSP position, thus, includes the following responsibilities: coordinating parent, student, and sponsor orientations and events; coordinating and assisting in the formation of student teams and job assignments based on student and sponsor requests; assisting with creation, coordination, and implementation of studet recognition strategies; scheduling and coordinating individual and group meetings with students and sponsors, serving as primary contact for assinged job sponsors; and assisting CWSP in identifying new sponsors.

JAV’s receive a monthly grocery stipend on top of a monthly allowance. JAV’s are also eligible for an Americorps grant through CVN. Please see our website for details:

Resettlement Projects Coordinator (AmeriCorps VOCAL Member)

Position Title: Resettlement Projects Coordinator (An AmeriCorps VOCAL member)

Reports To: Director of Resettlement Services

Status: 35 hours per week for 1700 hours within the year. Some evening and weekend hours are necessary. The position starts September 1st 2012 and ends in late August of 2013. For more information on the status of this position, see summary below.

Summary:

World Relief Chicago assists with the resettlement of refugees through cultural adjustment and employment services, English classes, youth programs, and immigrant legal services. This position leads orientations and training sessions for refugees; coordinates the work of churches and volunteers in the department; assists with the allocation of in kind donations to refugees and case management tasks as needed; and performs other related tasks in Resettlement Department. World Relief Chicago is located at 3507 W. Lawrence in Chicago’s Albany Park Neighborhood.

Primary Responsibilities

Coordinate Good Neighbor Team Volunteers

  • Collaborate with the Church Mobilizer/Advancement Officer on the recruitment, placement and appreciation of church volunteers in the Resettlement Department with the goal of these volunteers assisting with refugee English language acquisition and adjustment to life in the U.S.
  • Ensure the ongoing training, support, and debriefing of churches and volunteers assisting refugees.
  • Provide orientation information and facilitate volunteer orientation for potential volunteers
  • Match church volunteers with refugees through an in-home or on site meeting.
  • Ensure church volunteers are aware of and meet the needs of refugee cases according to World Relief resettlement model and can provide English conversation support to promote refugees’ English language acquisition.
  • Respond promptly to calls, concerns, and needs of church volunteers.
  • Mediate between refugee needs as expressed by resettlement team and church volunteers to provide additional assistance to refugees when necessary.
  • Ensure that all church volunteers are in compliance with paperwork and training requirements, including submission of background checks.
  • Track church volunteer involvement on various databases.
  • Conduct home-visits with clients as needed to ensure that the client volunteer partnership is meeting client needs.

Lead Follow-up Cultural Orientation

  • Lead cultural orientation sessions (as a follow up to the initial/primary orientation) according to language groups, incorporating ESL methodology primarily and utilizing interpreters as needed. The purpose of the orientation is to help limited English speaking refugee clients understand American culture, systems, rules and opportunities and reinforce what they learned at their initial orientation.
  • Answer questions the refugees may have about the resettlement process

Resettlement Department Tasks

  • Provide support to the In Kind Donations Coordinator in responding to potential donors of in-kind items such as clothing, household goods, and furniture to refugee families and assist in arranging for the donation to be made.
  • Attend external meetings with partners related to tasks in position description.
  • Attend staff meetings in the department and all staff meetings.
  • Provide support to the case management staff with general case management tasks as needed including taking limited English speaking clients to emergency appointments, connecting refugee clients with urgent needs to resources and documenting interactions with clients in case notes where needed.
  • Provide support to the Church Mobilizer/Advancement Officer with planning of various events including the Annual Fundraising Dinner, World Refugee Day, etc.
  • Provide support to the Director of Resettlement Services as needed

Job Summary:
Umoja Student Development Corporation is looking for a dynamic individual who is passionate about challenging youth to think critically and build positive leadership skills. The Community Builders Student Advocate will be on the front lines, supporting the implementation of student leadership and identity development programming that educates about and promotes positive change around school
culture.

The Community Builders Student Advocate will work closely with CB interns, Umoja, and Free Spirit Media staff to address the holistic needs of the student. Combining passion and creativity with strong planning, organizational, and facilitation skills, this position will support the creation of curriculum, contribute to the development and facilitation of programming with students, require the facilitation of student groups and relationships, and the coordination of some aspects of program logistics and administration. This position reports to Umoja’s Program Director.

1. Partner with Umoja staff in the execution of Umoja leadership and identity development programming at Community Builders (CB).

Overview:

The Shriver Center provides national leadership in advancing laws and policies that secure justice to improve the lives and opportunities of people living in poverty.

Responsibilities:

The External Affairs VISTA will assist with the Shriver Center’s development and outreach through the following activities:

  • Interact via mainstream media with news reporters, potential policymakers & staff,advocates, and other prospective constituents

AmeriCorps*VISTA: Market Field Support

About Jumpstart

Jumpstart is a national early education organization working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Jumpstart delivers a research-based and cost-effective program by training college students and community volunteers to serve preschool-age children in low-income neighborhoods. Through a proven curriculum, these children develop the language and literacy skills they need to be ready for school, setting them on a path for lifelong success. Position Overview
The Jumpstart Market Field Support VISTA will increase the capacity of the programmatic aspects of Jumpstart’s emerging markets. The VISTA will work with site managers and the market-based team to strengthen relationships within the communities they serve through a variety of activities. Examples include developing systems and tools to increase efficiency of work accomplished, strengthening partner relationships and supporting important initiatives.

The VISTA will report to the Program Director of Chicago and be based out of Jumpstart’s market office in Chicago, IL.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Support Family Involvement Initiative
• Support site-based family involvement initiatives to support the local Jumpstart market as well as increase community awareness of Jumpstart and the importance of early childhood education
• Work with Site Managers to strengthen Jumpstart’s family involvement initiatives, i.e. create systems and templates to standardize the family planning process
• Implement a local Jumpstart Ambassador program.
o Activities include: recruit and prepare at least two and up to six parents to speak on behalf of Jumpstart to local community partners and Jumpstart stakeholders
• Design, write and produce materials related to family involvement

2. Partner Relationship Management
• Coordinate activities, systems, and information that will lead to strong partnerships between Jumpstart sites and local community agencies and preschools
• Work with market staff to assist in the program partner recruitment process
o Activities include: outreach to preschool agencies, facilitate program partner roundtables and meetings, manage application process, assist with selection process and facilitate contract negotiations

3. Systems Management
• Develop and improve used systems for gathering critical field data and work to translate information into stronger operating practices and school success in preschool children
• Develop and maintain effective systems for recruitment and retention, outreach and campaigns to engage more college students as Jumpstart Corps
• Coordinate key communication systems so that the market offices are better equipped to assess and address the needs of Jumpstart sites

Housing Action Illinois works to increase and preserve the supply of decent, affordable, accessible housing in Illinois for low-and moderate-income households. The Illinois Affordable Housing Support Project manages 15 AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers to work for seven organizations in the Illinois area.

These national service positions provide opportunities to coordinate local volunteers, develop resources, fundraise, build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, eliminate poverty and assist individuals who are homeless. These national service positions are part of AmeriCorps VISTA (www.americorps.gov) and VISTA members will serve with a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working on issues related to affordable housing.

Position:

Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing is seeking a Development VISTA to help build capacity of the organization to support its mission. The Development VISTA will work as a team member to increase the visibility of LCBH in the Chicagoland community and create awareness of its mission to shed light on the housing related issues faced by the most vulnerable members of our community.

The Development VISTA will be an instrumental member of the development team and can expect to be involved in a wide range of sustainable capacity building activities that will lead to an exciting and enriching experience and will deliver meaningful and transferable skills relevant in today’s employment market.

VISTA Member Duties:

  • Research and track new funding opportunities, including foundations, corporations, law firms, and individuals.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of sustainable strategies to increase individual donations through enhanced relationship building
  • Coordinate development of an organization-wide tutorial for a new donor tracking system
  • Serve as staff liaison to LCBH Young Professionals Board to create new and sustainable fundraising activities.
  • Assist in the development of written and multimedia materials to support fundraising efforts, marketing activities, and program training
  • Coordinate and maintain website content and assist in developing a social media communications plan.
  • Create marketing materials for distribution including newsletters, brochures, email campaigns, event related materials
  • Participate in all aspects of the development and execution of three fundraising events and a year-end appeal.
  • Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings
  • Maintain organizational grant calendar with grant application due dates and reporting deadlines and other internally-set donor appeal deadlines

General Eligibility:

  • AmeriCorps*VISTA Members must be at least 18 years of age at the time of placement
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, National, or Legal Resident
  • Able to commit and serve on a full-time basis for 1 year
  • Not listed on the National Sex Offenders Public Registry

Skills:

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to organize and prioritize work and meet critical deadlines
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in using the Internet and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and willingness to learn new applications
  • Interest in social media and other communication through technology
  • Works well on a team, takes initiative to motivate volunteers and teammates

Overview of the AmeriCorps*VISTA Program:

VISTA Members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. With passion, commitment, and hard work, you’ll create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.

By serving through VISTA, you will gain new skills, friends and experiences - plus you will get the satisfaction that comes from serving others. During your service you will also receive a modest living allowance, health care and other benefits. Upon completing your service you can choose to receive either a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a post-service stipend.
