This is an unpaid internship position.

We are seeking an editor/writers for our new “OneWorld” Newsletter and Website. OneWorld is a monthly newsletter for the non-profit organization HumanThread that is dedicated to popularizing a culture of peace and nonviolence through art, education and discussion focused on youth.

Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English or related field. Demostated skills in the following areas: analysis, research/reporting, writing, verbal communication, editing/proofreading, graphic creation/optimization for online media, newsletter/web site editing and production, and general messaging, quality and standards control of communications pieces. Above all, applicants should be highly self-directed.

Marketing communications experience in a educational environment is desirable, but not required.

Samples of previous work and/or a portfolio may be requested upon interview.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create content for Newsletter & Web site (Wix flash & HTML website template (no coding needed) - Gather missing information needed to build out newsletter & site - Identify events and happenings of interest around the city that are relevant to the mission of HumanThread (HT) - Interview and write news stories about the happenings at the HumanThread center/gallery or the schools HT serves - Update events calendar and other routine site maintenance tasks - Analyzing existing communication tools and client requests for best application to the Web

SKILLS/PROGRAMS:

Experience with HTML visual and text editors, working knowledge of Photoshop/Imageready, InDesign and other publishing programs desirable but not required.

Excellent collaboration skills.

Are you wondering if a career in public relations, journalism, field organizing, or progressive politics is for you? This internship will offer you a chance to learn about crafting communications strategy, working with reporters, and winning advocacy campaigns.

The Sierra Club’s Media Team is seeking an intern for a national campaign based out of our Chicago office. This is a great opportunity to learn more about communications in the non-profit field, while making an impact on critical environmental issues like climate change, fossil fuels and clean energy, and conservation.

While projects vary depending on the time of year, most interns gain exposure to:

  • Pitching stories to the news media
  • Writing and editing press materials, reports, and presentations
  • Monitoring and compiling Sierra Club media coverage
  • Assisting in data analysis and research projects
  • Preparing and distributing media props and materials
  • Answering media inquiries and responding to the field requests
  • Social media and blog outreach
  • Building press lists
  • Helping design, set up and present media skills trainings
  • Brainstorming media opportunities, media strategy, talking points/messaging
  • Attending events and hearings
  • Providing general support for the Communications team
  • Other public relations and communications tasks and individual projects as assigned

The ideal candidate for an internship with Sierra Club is self-motivated, energetic, flexible and a strategic thinker with very strong writing abilities, good organizational skills, understanding of the political system, and a passion for the environment and social justice. Responsibilities will be tailored to personal skills and areas of interest to the best of our ability.

Other qualifications: Current college student or recent college graduate. If you are foreign student, we cannot review your application unless you are part of a program that arranges your paperwork for you — we cannot arrange an H1B visa.

Media Team Internships are 3-6 months in length, with interns working a minimum 20 hours per week, scheduled at their discretion. Internships are unpaid, although we do offer a modest local travel reimbursement. Current students are eligible for a modest scholarship, and academic credit may be available (we are willing to provide any documentation necessary to help students get credit at their college or university).

Video Intern

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is seeking a creative and motivated individual to intern in its Communications Department. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop portfolio pieces as a film/video editor while working at an active, upbeat non-profit.

We are looking for an individual with experience in video design who wishes to learn more in this area while helping to develop a series of short videos that highlights the work of AFC and its partners. The videos will be featured on AFC’s website, YouTube channel, and used for marketing and promotional purposes. During his/her tenure, the Design Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy.

The Video Intern will directly work with the Communications team with drafting concepts and scripts for the video. The intern will help refine the concept and script, direct and produce the video components, develop any additional multimedia components, and edit the final piece.

The Video Intern may spend some of his or her intern hours outside of the office, but must be responsive and meet regularly with staff. This person will work closely with AFC’s Staff Writer & Communications Manager.

This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills she or he may have acquired in school related to his or her particular areas of interest, and apply them in a professional setting. He or she will gain a better understanding of the role that visual communication can play in a non-profit setting, and be better prepared to work in the arena of communications, visual communications, graphic design, journalism, web design, public relations and marketing. The candidate will also have opportunities to network with program staff, policy staff, development staff, and the broader community.

The Video Intern will learn to:

  • Set-up and tear down shoots (cameras, lighting, backdrops);
  • Manage release forms;
  • Convert Beta tapes to DVD;
  • Capture footage;
  • Update social networking pages;
  • Archive final project;
  • Shoot AFC events/happenings as needed or as a specific interest develops.

Qualifications:

  • Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in communications, visual communications, graphic design, journalism, web design, public relations and marketing fields;
  • Experience with Adobe Premier, AfterEffects, Final Cut Pro;
  • Experience shooting video;
  • Knowledge of lighting and audio;
  • Experience in video and image editing;
  • Excellent cooperation and communication skills.

This internship is unpaid (stipend available), however, AFC can help interns obtain college credit for their work, where available. The intern will receive necessary training and staff supervision. We require a minimum of 15 hours/week for a minimum of 8 weeks, though longer internships are preferred. Communications, visual communication, graphic design, journalism, web design, public relations and marketing majors are encouraged to apply.

Photo Internship

Urban Gateways is a non-profit organization that works to provide equitable access to the arts through a wide range of high quality arts programming placed in low income schools and communities that bring unique perspectives and skills to the learning process, create collaborative opportunities for schools and all members of the community to effectively work together in furthering arts education for our young people.

We are seeking volunteers to shoot high quality photos of students engaged in our arts residencies in schools throughout the Chicago area. Finished work will be utilized by marketing and development and displayed in collateral, on the web, and in various other media outlets.

This is a great opportunity for someone with interest and experience with photography to build a portfolio, get some experience, or simply give back. By helping to tell the story of Urban Gateways, you will help to ensure the long life of programs that make lasting impact on the underserved youth in Chicago.

Graphic Design and New Media Intern

Video Intern for llinois Campaign for Better Health Care

As a Video intern, you will work directly with Health Care Justice professional organizer/staff. Under the guidance of staff, interns will work mostly on our storybank project, a critical piece of our overall campaign to secure accessible, affordable, and quality health care for all.

Your work will include:

  • taping and editing raw footage of “health care story sharers”, people whose lives have been greatly impacted by our current health care system.

Video intern with The Nevica Project

The Nevica Project is looking for a summer intern to create a video presence for our online gallery and art consulting business.  This will be a great experience to work with a company that has been online since the beginning of 2008.  One of the real forerunners in online fine art sales (pre-recession era).

What we are looking to do now is to stay current with the times.  We want to include video to our website and social media pages.  

We have a goal to get video footage from all the artists we represent living in Japan, China, Australia, Iceland, Italy, etc.  and create some short promotional videos.  We are also looking to document our monthly online exhibitions in a video format.
