Newsletter/Web Writer/Editor

This is an unpaid internship position.

We are seeking an editor/writers for our new “OneWorld” Newsletter and Website. OneWorld is a monthly newsletter for the non-profit organization HumanThread that is dedicated to popularizing a culture of peace and nonviolence through art, education and discussion focused on youth.

Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English or related field. Demostated skills in the following areas: analysis, research/reporting, writing, verbal communication, editing/proofreading, graphic creation/optimization for online media, newsletter/web site editing and production, and general messaging, quality and standards control of communications pieces. Above all, applicants should be highly self-directed.

Marketing communications experience in a educational environment is desirable, but not required.

Samples of previous work and/or a portfolio may be requested upon interview.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Create content for Newsletter & Web site (Wix flash & HTML website template (no coding needed) - Gather missing information needed to build out newsletter & site - Identify events and happenings of interest around the city that are relevant to the mission of HumanThread (HT) - Interview and write news stories about the happenings at the HumanThread center/gallery or the schools HT serves - Update events calendar and other routine site maintenance tasks - Analyzing existing communication tools and client requests for best application to the Web

SKILLS/PROGRAMS:

Experience with HTML visual and text editors, working knowledge of Photoshop/Imageready, InDesign and other publishing programs desirable but not required.

Excellent collaboration skills.

Marketing/ Advertising Internship

The Marketing and Advertising internship for Leila Grace Foundation requires an individual that will aid in marketing our foundation to college student groups in order to gain students to join Leila Grace Foundation as volunteer advocates, bloggers, and video bloggers. We are looking for an individual, who is able design flyers and email marketing campaigns to attract volunteers needed for our events, website, future films, and for fundraising events. Can be a virtual internship or used as academic credit.

Graphic design experience preferred as well as marketing experience is required.

Volunteer Crisis Intervention/Advocate for YWCA Chicago

Objective: To provide non-judgmental emotional and technical support to victims of sexual assault and non offending significant others, provide referrals and telephone follow-up with victims, as necessary.

Responsibilities: Advocates are required to take 30 hours of on-call shifts per month, providing 24-hour on call medical advocacy to seven contracted hospitals in DuPage County, Hinsdale Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Glen Oaks Hospital, Central DuPage Hospital, Edward Hospital, and Bolingbrook Medical Center emergency rooms. With the survivor’s permission, volunteer advocates are expected to stay with the survivor throughout hospital examination, evidence collection and police interviews. Crisis Intervention Counseling will be provided to the survivor and her/his non-offending significant others.

Qualifications: Volunteers must demonstrate a non-judgmental, supportive attitude toward all survivors of sexual assault. Volunteers must sign a one-year agreement and provide YWCA- Patterson and McDaniel Family Center with monthly service.

Volunteer Courtwatcher for Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network

Purpose: To monitor domestic violence related court cases and report significant data and observations, which will be used to track important trends in the court’s response to domestic violence. Reports based on YOUR observations will be sent weekly to chief policymakers within the Domestic Violence Divison of Cook County Circuit Court. These observations will also be filtered into quarterly report, culminating in a year-end report that is available to the public.

Benefits: Making a difference in your community by holding the justice system accountable for its treatment of victims of domestic violence, learning more about the justice system and the dynamics of domestic violence, and contributing to your community’s call for greater transparency and openness with our elected officials and governmental institutions.

Youth Mentoring-Plus-Jobs program Mentor

The Pilsen/Little Village Youth Mentoring-Plus-Jobs program seeks motivated Adults
from the community to participate in the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI) Youth Mentoring-Plus-Jobs program.

The Youth Mentoring-Plus-Jobs program is a Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI)
project in collaboration with the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority (IVPA). Under
this project, Instituto del Progreso Latino is working in partnership with ENLACE, Latinos Progresando, General Wood Boys & Girls Club of Chicago.

The Mentoring-Plus-Jobs is a youth development/peer-to-peer outreach model that
IVPA is using to engage Chicago residents in ongoing conversations around violence
prevention and mental wellness. Under this program, Community Action Teams (CATs) will be created to conduct outreach. CAT members are made up of young people who live in violent communities or have been victims or witnesses of violence.

Instituto del Progreso Latino seeks dynamic Mentors to work with groups of youth to conduct community outreach throughout the Pilsen/Little Village communities. Mentors should be non-judgmental and possess and be able to connect with youth through their personal experiences, while setting a professional example for the youth. Mentors will work 12-17 hours per week at $11.25 per hour for 22 weeks. Participants must pass criminal background check and child abuse check.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervising, mentoring and monitoring all youth assigned for given outreach
activities
Assists with Youth orientation & training sessions
Completing all paperwork for outreach in the field
Assists with the preparation of outreach activities.

Qualifications, Experience/Education
High School diploma or equivalent, BA strongly encouraged to apply
Experience working with and supervising youth
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel & Word)
Comfortable speaking to/working with the public

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mentors must be comfortable working outdoors and do a considerable amount of walking.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Booster trainings are performed in a general office environment. Outreach is done throughout the
Pilsen and Little Village Communities.

Web & Social Media Fellow at Changing Worlds

The leaders of Ten Thousand Ripples, a new Public Art and Peace Project seek an energetic and experienced candidate to fill the role of Web & Social Media Fellow for a period of four months for 20+ hours per week with the possibility for further engagement and consideration for future employment. The Web & Social Media Fellow will report directly to the Mark Rodriguez, Executive Director of Changing Worlds and will execute the social media strategy and provide writing for web content and other media in support of the launch of this Public Art Project. Characteristics such as professionalism, attention to detail, strong communication and excellent writing skills, an independent and strong work ethic, and passionate commitment to social change and social impact will go far to recommend the strongest candidates for this role.

Organization Description:


Changing Worlds is an educational arts nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster inclusive communities through oral history, writing and art programs that improve student learning, affirm identity and enhance cross-cultural understanding. Changing Worlds is the lead arts institution for the TTR project in a consortium of cultural and educational organizations, social service and community development agencies.
